So, you are thumbing through Instagram and you see an ad for those sunglasses you gotta have. Thanks to technology, 3 clicks and 5 days later they are at your front door. Pretty cool right? Before you hit submit let’s look for a couple of things on that website to make sure you are voting for responsible business with your purchase.
When I see a product that I like the first thing I do is go the website, click the menu and look for the about section. I love knowing the story behind the product to make sure my money is supporting something positive. Look for sustainability information like carbon neutral shipping, use of recycled materials, sustainably sourced wood, tree planting, and plastic free packaging. You might also find purpose driven organizations that gives back to those in need or efforts that support environmental health. The goal here is to just be aware of what you are supporting with your purchases.
Here are a few examples we have come across, and what we look for while shopping to vote for responsible business.

“We believe that big change starts small. Whether you’re bringing eco-bags to the grocery store (when you remember), or have a fancy reusable water bottle, we are here to celebrate the small wins. At Tentree, we empower everyone to plant trees with their purchases, while offering sustainably made products for everyone to enjoy. “

“We fund verified emissions reduction projects through our partner 3Degrees. These investments support environmental projects, such as protecting forests that improve air quality and absorb carbon, sponsoring wind and solar farms that generate clean energy and replace fossil fuels, and developing greener methods for producing auto parts. “

“Here at Pela we have a big, hairy audacious goal. We want to create a waste free future. We believe that the technology exists to make everyday products without everyday waste, it just takes the right company with the right community to make these products the new normal. This is why we are developing products made of environmentally sensible materials. To educate and inspire the global community of people who are committed to making a positive impact on our planet. “

“Over 80% of GoLite’s first product line is developed from environmentally preferred, recycled and low energy production materials and processes.”

“We wanted to create a sustainable stream of giving that wouldn’t rely on donations. Since September 2015, we’re thrilled that your purchases have helped provide over 8 million meals to children in need!”

“We do organic. It’s all we’ve ever known and it is what separates us from the trend chasers and the half-hearted. Our authenticity allows us to challenge the stereotypes of organic — it’s too expensive, it’s only important when it comes to food, it’s only for environmental activists. Wrong – it’s for everyone — all day, every day — from work to travel to lazy Sunday mornings in bed and even those crazy on-the-go days. Our clothes are practical, comfortable, and easy because life isn’t always so. If it is a textile that touches the skin, Pact is the one-stop-shop where consumers can find organic alternatives that fit their lifestyle because doing good should be easy. “
